thumbup Seraph's Korean & Japanese Hit movies
« Thread started on: Sep 11th, 2004, 12:04am »

Just thought I'd mention a few decent movies for those new to Korean and Japanese films!!!

KOREA:

My Sassy Girl (Obvious choice here...but it helps that it's one of the greatest RomCom's ever made.)

A Tale Of Two Sisters (Great horror movie...with an excellent cast and director and beautiful, though haunting, cinematography.)

The Classic (Kwak JaeYong's follow up movie to My Sassy Girl...more of a straight Romance/Melodrama...but still very well made.)

il Mare (Again. A romance film starring Jun Jihyun...except this time with a time twisting plot.)

JAPANESE:

Azumi (A dumb, but extremely fun Chambara/Samurai/Comic book movie from up and coming director Ryuhei Kitamura.)

Ping Pong (Fun movie based on the game Ping-Pong with some great little Matrix style "Bullet time" effects.)

Avalon (It's not for everone but this weird sci-fi movie from the director of ghost in the shell is truly mind bending.)

If you'd like to see any of these reviewed in full...then just let me know!!!

Thanks,
Seraph cool

of your 4 korean movies I have only saw My Sassy Girl
I think it was ok, maybe my high expectation from the movie since alotsa peeps rave about it.

I like pingpong , it drags and slow at some points but overall an entertaining movie.

yup a full review of Avalon would be nice

Good points about both movies Langong33!

I was lucky enough to see My Sassy Girl pre-hype. so i really didnt know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised.

You're right about Ping Pong too but it's still a cool little film...glad you enjoyed it.

Avalon...man thats going to be a hard review!!!
It's one weird movie. But very clever too.

I'll get to work!!!
Thanks

I saw Two Sisters some time ago. I think it's flawed in a way because the way they did the twist near the end was a little confusing, if not for that it would be a great movie. I love the beautiful cinematography. A review for Avalon would be nice. I'm making a note to see some of the others on your list especially the Classic and Il Mare.

Ha Crazymoviesrock,

Youre totaly right about the twist in ATOTS.
I guess we're just meant to work it all out ourselves.

Glad you'll check out The Classic (it's very well made with lovely direction and a sweet story)

And il mare is a really clever romance movie with great cinematography also

I haven't yet seen any of the above Japanese or Korean films although i desperatly want to see Azumi, Ping Pong, A Tale of Two Sisters and My Sassy Girl.

I also really enjoyed Battle Royale, an excellently produced film with gore galore.

A film i would recommend would be the Japanese film Audition but beware this movie is as EXTREME as it gets. wink

Hey Paul!

Thanks man for telling me about the Optimum release of Azumi. I was thinking of buying that, maybe i'll get a copy off dddhouse instead.

I have quite a lot of the HKL and Premier Asia releases. I'm looking forward to the Wing Chun DVD even though i just bought a copy of it but as the HKL discs are packed full of extra's and are awesome quality i guess i'll buy that one too. grin

I also can't wait for the release of Ju On which i've been desperatly wanting to see. I've been patiently waiting for Premier Asia to release it, resisting tempatation of buying a copy off the net, same goes for Ong Bak which Premier Asia are releasing early 2005. tongue

Wow Neo! I'm really surprised you haven't heard of Audition, you got to dig out a copy of it as soon as possible mate. wink It's probably my favourite Japanese movie even though i haven't seen a great deal of them.

Hi Nick,

Awesome. we probably have the same dvd collection.

Yeah it's sad about the optimum release.

Basically they took out one or two scenes which show the softer side of Aya Ueto's character. also weirdly one or two fight scenes were cut/and or speeded up! shocked(

Also the Subs are burnt in which i find quite annoying. I sometimes like to watch action films without subs so that i can see the action better!

And yeah Ju-On and Ong Bak premiere asia are going to be awesome!

Japanese:
Sky High -- A lot of beautiful chicks and really cool fighting scenes
Onmyoji 2 -- Extraordinary CGs, colorful movie, nice costume, good story, Kyoko Fukada topless cool, but with so damn annoying cool-ish male protagonist
Quill -- Nice touching movie with cute dog. Really love the first 10 minutes of the movie with all those little puppies

Korean:
Old Boy -- A very smart movie with unexpected twist in the end + damn cool long fighting scene along the hallway with bunch of gangsters.
My Little Bride -- Sassy Girl-type of movie with the female protagonist from 'A tale of two sisters'
Too Beautiful to Lie -- Another excellent romantic comedy movie from Kim Ha Neul (My Tutor Friend, Dead Friend)
